Should be able to, the screen is only an output device

    1. turn both on, connect with a cross-over network cable and access the laptop over the network.

    2. get an external laptop harddrive case, take out the harddrive from the busted laptop, connect to external case and access data via usb port.

If you have a CRT (Monitor) or LCD (Monitor) you can use a “VGA” standard cable (15-pins) to output the video from your “busted” laptop. Here’s how…

    1. Shutdown: “Busted” laptop
    2. Plug In: VGA (15-pin, usually blue) cable into laptop
    3. Boot: “Busted” laptop

You can now see everything going on and backup your files or even create an exact copy of your hard-disk using a backup utility. This way you can save your files and all settings. Let me know if you need more information on this.

This is the most efficient way to accomplish what you’re doing. Using the method described in the previous post will work. However, if any settings are not right you’ll spend hours trying to correct network settings. Therefore try this first and then you’ll have access to the actual video to be able to accomplish everything else. This will help you at the root of the problem and you won’t just be dealing with the symptoms (i.e. transferring files).
